Curse You George Lucas

So it has finally happened. George Lucas has agreed to release the original theatrical versions of the Star Wars trilogy on DVD (link). The demand was overwhelming, and even though George insists that the original versions are dead to him, the business man in him can’t pass up the chance to make a buck here. So for a limited time from September 12th to the end of the year you can pick up 2-disc copy of the 2004 Special Edition version of Star Wars?which is different from the theatrical realease of the Special Edition releases of a few years back?that includes, as a bonus, the original theatrical version.

My fear is that they won’t take the time they did with the DVD release from a few years ago. The quality of those films was astonishing and I am not sure if they will take that much time for the theatrical release version.

Of course, I will be buying them. I must have the original (and true) versions on DVD. It is a requirement if I am ever to pass on the tradition to Thing 1 and Thing 2. They should see the untainted versions first. They must understand that Han shoots first.

Of course this also begs the question, “will I be buying all these again in 5 years on HD-DVD or Blu-ray?” I am sure they will release the Special Edition v2 (AKA the 1st DVD release), but if they release the theatrical versions again, I will so buy it.
